Essential College English is a compulsory common basic course for college students. The syllabus is made according to the Teaching Requirements of College English Courses that issued by the Ministry of Education, and acts as the main basis for English teaching of non-English major college students. The purpose of College English teaching is to cultivate students’ comprehensive ability to use English, especially listening and speaking ability; to make the student conduct oral and written information communication in English during the working and social communication process; meanwhile, to strengthen student’s independent learning ability, and to improve student’s cultural literacy, so as to adapt to the requirements of social development and international communication of our country.
The requirements for undergraduate College English teaching are set at three levels, i.e., basic requirements, intermediate requirements, and higher requirements. Non-English majors are required to attain to one of the three levels of requirements after studying and practicing English at school. The basic requirements are the minimum level that all non-English majors have to reach before graduation.
